1930.12.17: enroute Rotterdam - Helsinki loaded with coke cargo wrecked Filsand, Osel Island (Vilsandi, Saaremaa Island, Estonia). News from Logansport Pharos-Tribune via newspapers.com:
A STRANGE TRAGEDY OF THE SEA. The Finnish vessel Wiiri grounded near Filsand, Estonia. A trawler approached in the heavy seas and four of the crew tried to reach it in a lifeboat, but were drowned within sight of their companions. The remainder of the crew, believing themselves lost, began a drinking orgy, which culminated in a desperate fight in which one sailor was killed with a hammer. Later the trawler rescued the remainder of the crew, with the exception ot a stewardess, who died of exposure.
(The next link tells in Finnish that five persons drowned when the lifeboat capsized: mate Volmar Jansson, engineer Nils Tisell, stoker Aarne Jokinen, stewardess Lydia Blomqvist and Estonian Johannes Nuga, who was crewmember of the rescue ship.
The killed young man was from Saaremaa island and was on rescue work when killed in a drunken dispute. Later in court, three young men from Saaremaa were sentenced to several years in prison. The WIRI was finally scrapped at its grounding site in summer 1938.
